As an artist and animation buff, I must say this film is a work of art. I’m not a titanic Bakshi fan either, I simply can’t ignore the truth. There are definitely things about his style that annoy me, like his attraction to larger women, so powerful that they are practically all he uses. His, ghastly yet fair style and his grim though realistic plan of society. Honestly, what makes this film behold so sterling is the rotoscoping. Now, I’m not saying every animation studio should engage it up, but since most non-Disney fascinating films are so badly gripping maybe it would be for the best. Anyway, the dialogue is tall, though some of the protagonists could have been a lot more likable. I’m not saying that storywise this film is good to gape, it’s a attractive murky sage, and even the victorius ending doesn’t alter that. But speaking as someone who has seen tons and tons of sharp films, this movie is so beautifully done that you can’t catch your eyes away from it no matter how depressing and sometimes annoying the account might fetch. Now I noticed one reviewer calling this film a failure because it was supposed to be a history of music and yet it had a few flaws here and there in its facts. This movie was in no method a failure as to what it status out to do. It was about perseverence, and destiny, and it’s lesson about the evolution of music in America was beautifully executed. Don’t fill those other reviewers. If you savor heavenly animation, dialogue, and dramatic scenes, you’ll be pleased this film. Don’t steal it as a cartoon babysitter for your slight kids though…

I watched American Pop for the first time after seeing a promo for it on the Anniversary Edition DVD of Heavy Metal. I loved Heavy Metal so I figured why not try this one out since it seems to be of a similar genre. Boy was I joyful I did…

Not only did I have no clue the movie was made in the early 80’s wheh I watched it in 1999, but I was absolutely floored by the fluid animation that was produced by Bakshi’s technique of Rotoscoping that was also outmoded in Heavy Metal, Wizards, and Lord of the Rings…

The animation and record line were some of the best I have seen…in any movie!! I never explore many dvd’s more than once but this one I have gotten through at least 5 times. It is an absolute masterpiece in animation and Bakshi’s best work to date.

Rotoscoping animation is largely misunderstood and doesn’t net enough credit. If more animation was done this plot, adults would probably luxuriate in more non-Disneyesque type features geared towards older audiences.

Battlestar Galactica’s unusual incarnation is obedient entertainment. The first two seasons were the best display on television, SciFi or otherwise. Stout themes, such as an apocalyptic vision of the demolish of the world born of the robot servant’s revolt (the Cylons) ; or a theory of human genesis that posits sister worlds, is interwoven with microscopic intimate personal detail of though-provoking charaters. Characters are explored – their pasts delved into to suppose their evolving natures. These individual threads are picked up and purchase the main threads and perform towards intriguing conclusion after fascinating conclusion. The central place – humanity’s struggle against the robot Cylons is nuanced as well. Battlestar’s staging succeeds as well. The special effects reach the set of the art for television. As others have illustrious, technology does not dominate. In fact, many key technologies are familiar – or even retro: they spend telephone handsets with intermittent audio problems; guns shoot bullets; set fighters stare like 1960s jet fighters; “Dradus” looks like contemporary radar; books are on paper (albeit with a trapezoid shape) ; their computers are not networked by gain. Like the rest of the writing, even these dinky details are explained and woven into the site – the anti technology slant is a reaction to the Cylon’s revolt. This allows the plotting and writing to remain in the fore – transcending the SciFi genre. I didn’t even mention the subtle and addictive language “Galactica thunder” that you will soon be talking (if you don’t already) . This is some ‘frackin’ fine stuff indeed.

Season 3 starts where season 2 left us – with the Cylons occupying the human settlement on Modern Caprica and oppressing the humans. The humans react with armed resistance and acts of insurrection including a suicide bombing. This depiction of armed insurrection as a basic human response to oppression is courageous, and extremely mettlesome considering the political environment at the time those episodes were written and filmed. These early episodes in Season 3 are controversial, thus, and as hard to observe emotionally as anything in the series. To folks who feel that this means the writers of this point to have joined Al Qaeda, I’d refer them to read history, including the history of the American Revolutionary War. Americans have behaved this design before (not that the humans of Battlestar Galactica’s world are Americans, of course, but they describe us – unavoidably. The 1984 film “Red Dawn” is all about American citizens animated in insurrection to fight the Russians for example) . The resolution of the Current Caprica crisis involves a position battle that contains the most thrilling special effects sequence I have ever seen on the diminutive conceal. Having grown up as a kid totally addicted to the recent campy/glossy BSG I must say when I heard they were beginning the whole thing anew in a fresh ample draw I was mad! I remember all the hoopla and hubbub regarding the direction of the novel series and treatments of characters and can safely say I fancy BOTH series with equal veracity.

Allow me to dwelling however that the novel BSG is quick becoming for me one of THE greatest works of film making art I have ever had the privilege to leer. The legend arc of the unusual BSG series is beyond superlative. Unlike some other reviews I have been gripped equally by each season and have also been totally immersed in it’s emotive and deeply mighty legend line. To be quite just the fable line of BSG makes Star Wars seem like a cartoon by comparison and I treasure the Star Wars series as well.

I am not going to bother giving away ANY residence spoilers as it’s the last thing any modern viewer needs – all you need to know is that with each season that passes I salvage I can’t win no frackin relief! It was an agonizingly long period to have to wait in Australia between Season 2 and Season 3, so great so I feared we’d never spy it at all. Now I have literally objective finished watching my edition all in the one hit in the site of 2 days … after the final scene I HAD to jump online and read the reviews I had been deliberately avoiding!

This expose kills me! So now I gain out there is a fresh Mini Series prequel about Pegasus called RAZOR! When can I glean this and when will it be released in Australia? If any Aussies out there care to believe me in I will be eternally grateful. All I can say is that I am totally spent after Series 3 and yet I NEED more already. Those who have watched this season already will know exactly what I mean when I say …

“I can’t score no relief”

BSG reigns supreme and I would treasure this to accelerate to 10 seasons! So say we frackin all!

“Area Antics”: Outtakes And Other Absurdities

Disc Two: Digital Copy of Feature Film

There are two deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Anne Fletcher and writer Peter Chiarelli. There is a nice scene with Andrew’s parents (Nelson and Steenburgen) . We also ogle Margaret and Andrew getting a tiny more comfortable with each other. They are nice enough scenes but not well-known and one can inspect why they were reduce.

There is an alternate ending with optional commentary. Fletcher and Chiarelli talk about why they didn’t spend this ending and another one that they didn’t exhaust as well. The humour in this scene is considerable broader than the rest of the film and seems out of dwelling.

“Status Antics: Outtakes and Other Absurdities from The Proposal” is a montage of the cast goofing around on station. It looks like they had a lot of fun making this film.

Finally, there is an audio commentary by Fletcher and Chiarelli. They commence off explaining the dichotomy between the two main characters. Fletcher says that Bullock loved the screenplay and gave Chiarelli all kinds of notes to invent her character nastier. He talks about the mechanics of the yarn while she talks about the challenge of working on situation. This is a fairly decent track by two people clearly proud of their film.

Luke Halpin stars in both films as Sandy Ricks, the Florida Keys teen who befriends a dolphin, Flipper.

In “Flipper”, Sandy’s father, Porter Ricks, is having a tough time as a fisherman. Between Red Tide and hurricane distress, cash is tight. Setting the stage, Porter tells Sandy the customary Greek anecdote of a dolphin rescuing a boy named Arion from the sea. While Porter is away, Sandy goes spearfishing with some friends. When Flipper and one spearfisher each score injured, Sandy helps out. When Porter returns, beneficial Flipper is doing tricks for Sandy. Is Flipper a devourer of Ricks family income? Does the Arion record accumulate reenacted? Is Flipper a keeper? The movie goes to its expected gratified ending.

The movie and the resultant TV series were so favorite that “Flipper’s Unique Adventure” was created. The spot of Florida has plans to compose the location. Flipper has to go. Sandy decides to cruise in a motorboat, to accompany Flipper out into nearby Caribbean island waters. The two net a deserted island paradise. Then a group of escaped criminals hijack a gigantic sailboat, marooning three English women on the island. Sandy makes cautious friends with Penny Hopewell (played by Pamela Franklin), while keeping hidden from the others. Then the criminals flee aid. What can Flipper and Sandy do? There is another cheerful ending.

These are both scrumptious family movies. The Elijah Wood “Flipper” is suited too.

Before the dolphin Flipper became a TV exhibit, he started out with two movies. This two sided disc contains both of the films made before the TV display began.

First up is “Flipper.” This movie tells us the sage of how Flipper and Sandy Ricks (Luke Halpin) became friends. It all started with a hurricane that hit the island in the Florida Keys were Sandy lives with his mother and fisherman father. While his father is getting his boat fixed, Sandy and a friend fetch an injured dolphin. Sandy nurses him assist to health, and the two become friends.

Frankly, this movie suffered from the dilemma I often have with pilots, it spent so long getting the main characters into dwelling that the resulting sage was dreary and monotonous. Calm, there were some fun scenes that made me smile and laugh. I found it most entertaining that Luke Halpin was the only actor from this movie to execute it to the series.

Side two contains “Flipper’s Unique Adventure,” a mighty better movie. While Porter Ricks (Brian Kelly taking on the role) is away training for a modern job, Sandy gets the news that their home is being reclaimed by the government. Fearing that he will lose Flipper, Sandy sets out in a boat to accumulate a deserted island where they can live. Unfortunately for Sandy, the island soon becomes the home of three castaways sent their by escaped convicts.

This movie had a couple expressionless parts, but on the whole it moved mighty faster. There were lots of stout dolphin scenes in this one. And the climax is truly thrilling. This movie also serves as a nice transition between the first and the TV series as it sets up several things that had changed between the two.

As I mentioned, this is a two sided disc. Each side contains one movie and the fresh trailers for both films. Each side is supposed to have a Tom and Jerry short as well. While the one on side A works, I couldn’t even earn the one for side B. That was a dinky disappointing, but since I’ve never been a big fan of the duo, it didn’t bug me too remarkable.

This disc is worth getting for the second film. Frankly, I can imagine kids, especially those who care for animals, enjoying both films.

A Extraordinary film showing how an artist- in this case Picasso- takes a blank sheet of paper or canvas and transforms it into a work of art. After reading the gushing, swooning review from the DVD critic in last Tuesday’s NY Times, I immediately ordered the “Special Collector’s Edition” of TO Score A THIEF from Amazon. When it arrived, I compared it to my fresh Paramount “Widescreen Edition” from 2002. Well, the critic was right–there’s simply no comparison. This original version has a 2.0 Dolby Surround soundtrack (in addition to the new mono version) and a cleaned-up, enhanced, crystal-clear record, initiate to conclude. It looks like they took the drab, blurry, feeble faded stock and actually washed it, removing years of dirt and grime and smoke and hair and whatever else was there, not to mention a computerized removal of virtually all scratches and glitches. The result is fantastic.

This fade brochure to adventure and romance is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most exciting films. The blooming vistas of the French Riviera are matched perfectly by the handsome duo of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Robert Burks’ cinematography was nominated for an Academy Award and Edith Head gives Grace Kelly the see of an American princess. A shapely screenplay from Michael Hayes based on a current by David Dodge, and a light romantic acquire from Lyn Murray combine with all the other elements to create this a legal film classic.

American John Robie (Cary Grant) has been living well in a stunning villa on the French Riviera for the past 15 years. Once the most distinguished thief in France, the man known as “The Cat” has been calm for many years. He was in prison during the war when the Germans bombed it. Coming on the heels of a romantic interlude between the two, it is especially insulting.

That evening together is framed beautifully by Hitchcock, cutting serve and forth between the fireworks outside on the Riviera and the fireworks going on inside. Kelly is like a roguish kitten with a gleam in her peep, and Grant the older cat, who’s seen her kind of kitten before and isn’t clear he wants to play. There is a amazing chemistry between the two, who seemed to be made for each other on the conceal. A wild waddle in her sports car along the cruise that has Robie a itsy-bitsy shy and a picnic in aesthetic dress are a treat to peer.

Complicating matters is another sexy kitten, Danielle Foussard (Brigitte Auber) . LIFE IN THE FREEZER examines life in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. Necessarily, this mostly involves pinnipeds and birds but he makes an exertion to give a big behold of life in all of its diversity ranging from lichens to huge whales and humans. What controls the lives of every organism in this hellish environment is the ice. The yearly cycle of the ice retreating and advancing controls everything from feeding to mating to watching feeding and mating. It is a harsh environment and, again, the footage is advantageous.

The Bountiful Sea -This episode takes area mostly north of the permanent ice but starts off with an explanation of how ice controls everything. From there, the food chain is examined and, in the Antarctic, that almost always leads help to the organism called krill. Almost everything eats it or eats something else that has eaten it. After review the basics, the action moves north to South Georgia Island which lies above the permanent ice. The birds examined in this one are able to gain ashore whenever they like. The essential foci are humpback whales, krill, wandering albatross and King penguins.

The Ice Retreats – Each year, the ice retreats south and this allows most of the wildlife to open its mating cycles. Even species that are mostly marine need land for mating and valid estate is at a premium as are females. Everyone is in a speed to bag started with the business of mating because there is minute time before the ice returns and the rearing needs to be completed before it does. Grand of this episode also takes situation in the sub-Antarctic but it moves from there to the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Hurry to Breed – For a species to succeed, it must be able to reproduce. This is no easy matter in any environment but the rigors of the polar environment objective add to the anguish. The various species have differing individual strategies but they almost all have one thing in common: Beat the Ice. In addition to fur seals, chinstrap penguins, and leopard seals, the lives of insects, crustaceans and plants are examined.

The Door Closes – As winter gets closer, the wildlife in the Antarctic has to prepare for the long and cool times ahead. The last of the kids have to be made somewhat self sufficient and everyone has to net where there will be adequate food and shelter. For most species, this means provocative north for a change of habitat and behavior. The ones who slide gradual are obliging to face dire consequences.

The Great Freeze – Winter is the substantial challenge for all life in the low south. Most species head further north but two have adapted to live out the worst of the frigid on the continent itself. Weddel seals pup and then organize themselves to support breathing holes initiate in the ice. They conclude the course along the edge of the continent. Emperor Penguins do one step further. They actually hatch their eggs during the worst of it and have adapted a strategy to survive. I affirm it helps that there are no predators around with which they have to peril.

Footsteps in the Snow – Man is a latecomer to the far south. This episode goes over some very brief points of the novel explorations and then examines how man has had to adapt to live and work down there. It also provides some keen footage on how this documentary series was shot and assembled. Although it is light on the natural history aspect of things, it is no less enchanting.

This is a disc that contains six movies on it, each with a theme that revolves around one season in the Antarctic and what happens during that time to the continent and the animals and birds that live in or on it.

These movies are so realistically and clearly presented that you need a blanket to curl up in while watching Attenborough stride around in freezing Antarctica filming all kinds of creatures – on land, under water and in the air. The guy (and his camera team) are simply extraordinary.

They spent three years filming these scenes. As anyone who has experienced anything colder than freezing can attest to, spending even a few minutes outside on a wintry day can be daunting. But to consume all your time in temperatures of 74 below, with winds of upto 120 miles per hour – that is either sheer determination or insanity, or maybe a mix of both.

Whatever, the result is startling movies that are breathtaking, superbly shot, and extremely well-presented. I have watched most of Attenborough’s films and they are all worthy. He is definitely the world’s most wonderful wildlife and nature filmmaker ever. He presents everything as is, without sentimentality, but with a definite sense of wonder at all the marvels he is depicting. When he speaks and shows you scenes, you feel you are there.

Hands down one of the top three wildlife films I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

Several of the reviews on this situation ask the Disney studio to release this film on DVD. Well, they have and this review refers to the DVD version.

I have been familiar with this movie since I worked at the Disney studio in 16mm film distribution in the 1970s (about 7 years before the VHS blockbuster years began), and am familiar with the recent negatives. In what I am finding to be typical of the Disney folks, this film is presented in a ‘full frame’ version, rather than a WIDESCREEN version. The film was shot for a 1:85×1 projected ratio (known as Academy Flat) which presents the report in a dinky retangular format. However, a tubby frame, 4×3 video transfer of such a negative isn’t all that poor, although it would have distinguised it from the normal VHS format.

Also, I am very surprised that the Disney people didn’t create an pains to ‘clean up’ the recent negative, which contains a spacious amount of negative dirt and scratches. The DVD does sustain the modern explore to the film (color and tint), but there has been so worthy technology invented to digitally reproduce an almost flawless image, that I am surprised it isn’t been passe. It is one of trhe major reasons that people have switched to DVD.

Also, witness for a mistake in the fresh negative. Unprejudiced after the horses board the squawk, there are reddish, flash frames (possibly an overexposure to the camera new negative) which could easily have been removed digitally.

A few “extras” would have been nice, such as behind-the-scenes material. This stinginess is becomming something famous with fresh Disney DVD releases. Walt Disney shot tons of background footage for every movie he made, and this is stored in the studio vaults. I’ve seen it in 16mm, although it was shot on 35mm.. You can ignore the lack of a WIDESCREEN image if the DVD contained these precious extras. Otherwise, it’s unprejudiced a transfer of the traditional VHS image. What’s the point of that?

As far as Robert Taylor’s performance, far from being ‘wooden’ (as one reviewer wrote) I agree with another reviewer who said that he was protraying a actual man (who was also alive at the time and a hero in Europe), and the script and direction decided to demonstrate a truthful, realistic portrrait of him. Don’t forget that this movie, and many others (BALLERINA, HORSE WITHOUT A HEAD, ALMOST ANGELS) were shot in Europe after World War II. They were made chiefly for a European theatrical audience and were intened for an American TV audience on THE Astonishing WORLD OF DISNEY. So, you’ll fetch a different style of acting and presentation: a bit uninteresting for us, but perfect for their intended audience.

The Spanish Riding School of Vienna has been around for hundreds of years, but was nearly lost in WW2 when the Lipizzaner breeding herd was separated from the stud farm of Piber and moved into Czechoslovakia, and then faced with possible destruction at the hands of the Russians.

Alois Podhajsky, the Director of the school, made a plucky inquire of the Americans, especially General Patton who himself had ridden in the 1912 Olympics, to put the horses. Patton appreciated the tradition of the Spanish Riding School and was able to execute the rescue of the breeding mares along with allied prisoners of war, effectively saving the Lipizzaners and the tradition of the School.

This Disney movie was made in 1963 and has some of the typical Disney characteristics of the time such as blunting the visual depiction of violence and war, but beyond the technical shortcomings, the movie accurately captures the desperate place facing those who would build a longstanding tradition streak in living beings — both the horses and the riders — and how many individuals through both minor and substantial gestures worked toward a current cause and saved an institution.

The movie was filmed largely on state, and to study it is to gaze a accurate portion of living history. I highly recommend it.

There is a scene in this film wherein Robert Shaw’s character, Romer Treece, discovers the body of a friend strung up in a shed, gently lowers it to the floor, and covers the body with his coat. Treece, overcome with difficulty, then drops to his knees and hugs his friend’s dead body. On this DVD, the scene ends after Treece covers the body with his coat. The footage that is supposed to follow is missing from both the widescreen and pudgy shroud presentations on this disc, so viewers don’t win to ogle a very much and emotional moment. Also, this DVD is a no-frills release, with unbiased the widescreen version on one side and the beefy camouflage version on the other–no trailers, nothing. Perhaps at some point there might be a special edition or director’s lop which will restore the missing footage. I can’t recommend this title in its unusual DVD incarnation.

An okay transfer of the movie on a bare-bones DVD.

Unfortunately, the makers of this disc decided NOT to include the 53 minutes of additional footage that was shown on the NBC broadcast of this film. This additional 53 minutes shows the sinking of the U-Boat during a storm, along with some additional fighting scenes.

Hoperfully a Special Edition of this film will be released that will feature either an extended sever or offer the deleted scenes seperately.
